Cable Execs are getting more and More Worried about Online TV.
June 29th, 2009
"I do think it's important to be technologically progressive and responsive to what consumers want. But that's a different thing, in my mind, from creating bad habits," Sapan said in an interview. "To offer these shows for free ... It's almost insulting to the consumer who's paying money for it, because it says to that consumer, 'What are you doing?'"
What kind of reasoning is that? What Josh Sapan really means to say to the Wallstreet Journal is: 'the dumb consumers who are giving away their tiny salaries to my Cable networks for a less than stellar offering are better than the intelligent consumers who have found a way to watch the same TV online and more.'(Read the Wallstreet Journal Article here) Really, who wouldn't bail out on paying a premium for limited repetitive channels to watch FREE online satellite TV with literally thousands of channels. Satellite TV online is apparently shaking up the television world.
Throughout this article Sapan espoused the wonderful offerings the big cable companies were initiating. He proudly touted the supposed 30% increase in women watching cable shows. If that's all Josh has got to hang his hat on then he is in for a RUDE awakening in a few months when online TV watchers increases by about 500%. Yes, it is really that serious...

Time Warner & Comcast Cable Set their sites on the real competition...
For the past few months, Satellite TV for PC offerings have become increasingly plenty. Much to Time Warner & Comcast's disdain, companies have been coming out of the woodwork promising to allow anyone with an internet connection to watch live TV online. Not only can you watch live TV on the internet, but the price is usually ONE payment of around $40 (One Time) to $60 compared to $60 - $90 EVERY month for Cable packages. Fortunately for these two conglomerates, up until recently the Satellite TV for computers has not been all that good. TV online products were usually hit or miss with uninteresting channels(same as cable actually), some of the software would only work for a few days, some required you to buy additional hardware for your PC, etc.
Enter Satellite TV for PC that perfected watching satellite television online. No glitches, no problems, no waiting. You just download the $49 software instantly and you're watching over 3000 channels. Of course this has driven Comcast and Time warner cable to discouraging the new internet TV technology.(Read the LA TIMES article here) The two companies are trying to make it so that people have to prove that they already subscribe to Comcast, Times Warner or Direct TV before they're able to watch Free satellite TV on their Computers. That would make it Free TV online that's NOT ACTUALLY FREE. They want you to pay for their service AND watch TV on the internet. Sorry big cable companies, I'll give you 5 years at most with your current economic model. If you don't get into the free TV on the PC game somehow, you'll be as dead as the VCR.

How Much Could You Save by Watching Satellite TV on Your PC
Over the past few months, one of my best friends Downloaded a program for $49.95 called Satellite TV for PC. The product promised to allow him to watch live TV on his computer. I told him he was wasting his money and that there's no way you pay less than fifty bucks for a real internet TV program. By my logic, he would at least have to by some kind of expensive computer hardware to make online TV really work. Think about it, for less than the cost of Cable ($60 per month) and Direct TV ($90 per month)-- Satellite TV for PC is supposed to give you access to over 3000 channels from all over the world. "Yeah Right," I said.
I was so wrong about this one. I admit it. I went to my friend's house to see for myself. He loaded up the program for me and in minutes we were watching live television online ---thousands of channels. I couldn't believe it! All the channels I pay $60 a month for. The channels were clear plus there was a guide to all those channels that was super helpful. His sister came in the room and we all watched that Movie Hitch then started exploring the internet channels. By the time I looked at the clock, six hours had passed!! But during that time, I had checked my email, wrote a report for work, Tweeted, and checked Facebook.
After that I was convinced but I decided to do some research on Satellite Tv for the PC. I came across a few articles that touted it as a hit and miss concept. Then I read an article on MacWorld.com about how Apple is developing the same software for MACs. If Apple is doing it then it MUST be the Future. I was one of the people who that the iPod and the iPhone would flop. I guess that was the other time I was wrong. The other article I read was a LA Times article talking about how Comcast & Time Warner were trying to discourage online TV. This is the real reason to try it out. Anything that the big greedy cable companies don't like, must be a great product that is in direct competion with them. So I bought the Satellite TV for PC, downloaded it, and have been watching ever since. I'm watching internet television and I CANCELLED my $60 per month Cable immediately.
